Ghost Ants: A Rare (and Cool) Find in Houston Pest Control

Ghost Ants in Houston eating food on counter

Most people in Houston are familiar with fire ants or carpenter ants, but there's another species that hardly ever makes an appearance: ghost ants. These tiny, pale-colored ants are so small and translucent that they're almost invisible to the naked eye.

What makes Ghost Ants so different?

Ghost ants are easy to miss because of their size and color. Their legs and abdomens are nearly transparent, giving them a "ghostly" appearance. Unlike common ants trailing across your kitchen counters, ghost ants prefer warm, humid environments and often nest in soil, behind baseboards, or inside potted plants.

Ghost ants can survive in Houston, where our climate provides plenty of warmth and moisture, but they're not as widespread as other ant species.

Why Ghost Ants are a problem.

Even though they're rare, ghost ants can quickly become a nuisance if they establish a colony indoors. They're known for invading kitchens in search of sweets and moisture. Once they find a food source, they lay down a trail leading to hundreds of ants marching through your home.

Ghost ants' colonies can also be tricky, as they often form multiple nesting sites. Eliminating one nest doesn't necessarily solve the problem; others may remain hidden in wall voids, under baseboards, or even in potted plants.

How do Ghost Ants get into homes in Houston?

Ghost ants may be rare in Houston, but when they appear, it usually happens in a few specific ways:

  • Warm, Humid Climate

  • Brought in Through Plants or Soil

  • Outdoor-to-Indoor Nesting

  • Food Sources in the Kitchen

  • Moisture Problems
